Super Swing Big Band is a
traditional Big Band, consisting of
four trumpets, four trombones, five Saxes,
Clarinet, 3 piece rhythm section, a female singer and is led by
Tom Plunkett.
The band is based in Beccles and its roots are
firmly rooted in the swing music of the 1940's
and 50's.
It all started at the Sir Leman
High School where Tom Plunkett coached a Jazz
group.
On graduation, some ex members of this group led
by Tim Moore,
persuaded Tom to form a band for adults. This
became known as the Waveney Big Band.
In time it
performed at charity shows and in the local parks
to raise funds for music and equipment.
As its reputation grew it attracted more players
who helped to raise the standard of the band.
However the name created confusion in the minds
of the public, many of whom thought it was a
brass band run by the local authority, whilst
others thought it was a youth orchestra. Hence
the adoption of our new name Super Swing Big Band.
